Bird Photos
Heidi Anderson watches a Turkey Vulture finishing the three mile flight from the tip of the Keweenaw to Manitou.
He's hard to see there on the iron supports of the lighthouse and he wants to be. This poor male Downy Woodpecker has just flown onto Manitou from the NE – apparently crossing about 80 miles of Lake Superior – and then been greeted by a Merlin which made about a half dozen dives on this fellow during his last couple hundred yards before arrival. Talk about survival of the fittest! I watched the event unfold just before 7AM on 7 October of 2003.
A kettle of mostly immature Broadwings over Perch Lake at 11AM on 29 June 2003 . I estimated about 70 to 90 birds at the time. After blowing up the photo, printing and carefully counting – I had to revise the number – there are 148. The photo has been cropped somewhat for this web posting.
